February at Porridge: Rain Outside, Warmth Inside

We are just over halfway through February, and if we are honest, it has felt very wet.

It seems like it has rained on most days this year so far. Fore Street has had that constant shine of drizzle, umbrellas have been a permanent fixture, and more than a few conversations in the shop have started with, “Has it stopped yet?”

But despite the grey skies, February at Porridge has felt warm.

After the busyness of January, the shop has settled into a steady rhythm. People have been popping in for the everyday essentials that keep things ticking over. Wholefoods have been quietly flying off the shelves. Oats, lentils, beans and grains have all been favourites, the sort of ingredients that turn into soups, slow cooked dinners and comforting breakfasts while the rain taps at the window.

There have been plenty of conversations around energy and immunity too. With sunshine in short supply, Vitamin D continues to be a regular topic. Magnesium has been popular for those wanting better sleep and calmer evenings. Nothing extreme, just practical support through the last stretch of winter.

Among the steady staples, we have also welcomed some lovely new arrivals this month. Clare has been busy hand putting together our dried flower bouquets, using beautiful British dried flowers. They have added a soft, natural feel to the shop and have already found their way into quite a few homes. Being plastic free and long lasting makes them feel especially fitting for this time of year.

We have also introduced a brand new range of greetings cards from independent artists. Over one hundred designs, all printed on recycled card and packed in compostable packaging. It has been lovely watching people take their time choosing something thoughtful rather than grabbing something last minute.

One of the biggest changes this month has been outside rather than inside. Our shiny new electric van is now on the road, helping us continue local deliveries around Brixham and the surrounding area with zero emissions. You may have spotted us out and about already. It feels like a small but important step forward for us.

We also had Jan from Viridian back in store this month, chatting all things supplements and answering your questions. It is always nice to have those in person conversations and give people the chance to ask about what might genuinely suit them.

The refill station has continued ticking along steadily, and the café has been a haven on rainy mornings. Voyager coffee has been poured in generous amounts, pots of tea have warmed cold hands, and people have lingered a little longer than usual.

Online orders have reflected much the same. Pantry staples, eco home essentials and everyday supplements have been the quiet heroes, especially for those who would rather stay dry.

If February so far has reminded us of anything, it is that even in relentless rain, community carries on. Thank you to everyone who has popped in, refilled, browsed the new arrivals, chatted to Jan, or placed an order online. We genuinely appreciate it.

There is still plenty of February left, so if you have not visited yet, we would love to see you. And if you would rather stay cosy at home, our online shop is always open.

Let’s hope the second half of the month brings a little more sunshine.
