We realised recently that April somehow escaped us.
The intention was absolutely there to sit down and write our usual monthly update, but as often happens when you run a small independent business, the days got busy, the weeks moved quickly and somehow we suddenly found ourselves mid-way through May already.
The joys of being a small team.
Thankfully, it has been busy in a good way.
Spring has fully arrived in Brixham now, and the last couple of months at Porridge have felt full of energy. The Brixham Pirate Festival brought plenty of life into the town earlier this month, with lots of familiar faces, visitors and a real buzz around the harbour and Fore Street.
Inside the shop, things have been moving quickly too. We’ve continued adding lots of new products across pantry staples, wellbeing, eco home and treats, alongside expanding some of our existing ranges that customers have been loving.
One of our favourite additions recently has been Weleda, a beautiful natural wellbeing and skincare brand that fits perfectly alongside the rest of our ranges. It’s been lovely introducing customers to the products and hearing such positive feedback already.
The café has been busy as well, especially on sunnier days when people have been stopping for coffee and cake while exploring the town. As we move towards summer, there’s definitely been a shift in atmosphere around Brixham.
One particularly lovely moment over the last couple of months was welcoming Diane Highfield Photography into the shop as part of her brilliant Brixham 2026 project. Diane spent some time taking natural photos of the team and capturing everyday moments around the shop. She has very kindly allowed us to use some of the images on our website and social media, so keep an eye out for those over the coming weeks.
Behind the scenes, we’ve also been spending time preparing for the busier summer season ahead. Restocking shelves, refreshing ranges, training the team and generally trying to stay one step ahead before the town gets even busier.
Health wise, this time of year often brings a shift too. We’ve had more conversations around seasonal allergies, natural skincare, lighter foods and gentle everyday support rather than the heavier winter focus of the past few months. It’s always interesting seeing how the seasons change what people naturally gravitate towards.
And of course, as always, there have been plenty of deliveries, lots of refills and more coffee poured than we could possibly count.
Thank you to everyone who has visited us in store, placed an online order, supported our social media or simply stopped by for a chat recently. We genuinely appreciate every bit of support.
If you enjoy these little monthly updates, you can also sign up to our newsletter where we share new arrivals, seasonal favourites, shop news and the occasional update from our small team. We usually send one thoughtful email each month, keeping you up to date with what’s happening both in store and online.
